GMSA - Factory & Statistics

INTRODUCTION:

In 1923 General Motors South Africa (GMSA) began distributing Chevrolet vehicles. In 1926, GMSA was importing and selling a wide range of vehicles, which included Oakland, GMC Trucks, Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Vauxhall. The Kempston Road assembly plant in Port Elizabeth was converted into a manufacturing facility in 1948. This was the start of incorporating local content into vehicles built and sold in South Africa. The “fishtailed” Cadillac and the Pontiac “Chieftain” models were first produced here.

In 1987, GM disinvested to comply with economic sanctions and turned over the operation to a local management group called Delta Motor Corporation.

In 1997, three years after democracy was declared in South Africa, GMSA bought 49% of Delta Motor Corporation. Negotiations for GM to purchase the remaining shares of Delta began in 2003. Early in 2004 GM fully returned to South Africa, purchasing the remaining 51% of the company, forming General Motors South Africa.
