Prominent German wind energy expert to share latest developments in wind energy at NMMU

In an effort to encourage public debate on energy, the Centre for Energy Research (CER) at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, the second in a series of public awareness forums on energy related issues will be held on Thursday, 11 March 2010.

Prominent North German wind energy researcher Prof Joachim Peinke will share current developments in wind energy.

The inaugural discussion forum on 26 February covered topics concerning energy policy and challenges in South Africa, and the metro’s response to these challenges.

Prof Peinke will discuss wind energy as one of the promising renewable energies.

In his presentation an overview of the actual ongoing developments in the wind energy field will be given, in particular with respect to the activities in North Germany, one of the world’s leading regions with respect to the wind energy application.

In addition, actual research topics will be discussed like that of man-made wind turbines, how to take advantage of turbulent wind situations as well as aerodynamics, mechanical loads and the fluctuations of the produced power.

The public awareness forum will be held in at the newly-constructed lecture theatres (Building 123) at 18:00 on South Campus. Signboards will be posted.
