The Eastern Cape
INTRODUCTION:
The Eastern Cape is rich in history and the region forms the centre of many historical events. It was here that the Xhosa, Dutch and British had their first encounters - a history-making convergence of civilisations, cultures, languages and lifestyles.
"The history of the Eastern Cape is essentially a history of South Africa. The region is indeed a microcosm of all that is our country; South Africa. Some flourished, yet others suffered; some enjoyed immeasurable levels of prosperity, whilst other endured inexplicable traumas of sufferance. This account account of a nation that was at war with itself must be told to build a common heritage that will forever bind us together in love, peace, humanity and fraternity ..." Bicks Ndoni, Deputy Mayor - Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality
